An Essay on ‘Rivers of Nepal’

Rivers of Nepal – Nepal is the real boon of nature. It is gifted by nature and god. Despite having a small territory and population, it is really rich in various ways. Although Nepal might be economically poor it is naturally rich.

There are green forests, lakes, rivers, and mountains covered with snow. These are the resources of Nepal. It is well-known fact that Nepal is the second richest country in the world in water resources.

There are many rivers in Nepal. The main three rivers of Nepal are- Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali. Among them, Karnali is the longest, whereas Gandaki is the deepest of Nepal. Likewise, Koshi is the biggest river in Nepal. Most of the rivers of Nepal originate from the Himalayas. There is a great importance of rivers in Nepal.

Firstly, they can be used to generate electricity. But Nepal is not able to produce enough electricity. So many Nepalese people still use oil lamps. If the government intends, enough electricity can be generated from the rivers.

Secondly, they can be used for irrigation. But all the Nepalese farmers are not getting irrigation facilities. Till now, many Nepalese people depend on rainfall. As a result, the production is low.

Thirdly, they can be used for transport. Rafting is possible in Nepalese rivers. There is a lack of drinking water in big cities. If the government intends, drinking water can be supplied in big cities.

However, the utilization of water in a wise way is the challenge of Nepal. Due to the political fluctuation and instability, our country is not taking the benefits from the rivers. Though people of Nepali are happy with the political system their lifestyle has not been changed.

There is great frustration on the part of the people towards the political leaders of our country. Corruption, favoritism, and the selfish nature of the political leaders are contributing factors.

Nowadays, the rivers of Nepal are being polluted. The holy river, Bagmati and Bishnumati are badly polluted. The wastages are directly thrown in these rivers. This should be stopped by the government. People should also stop rivers from being polluted.

The government should try to use rivers for irrigation and the generation of electricity. If done so, plenty of crops can be grown. We don’t need to import crops from foreign countries.

It is said that uneducated people see water in the river and educated people see electricity in the river. Therefore, we should try our utmost to take the benefit from the water. Our neighbor country India is also getting benefits from the water resources of Nepal.

Somerivers of Nepal have been originated from China while some of them flow from different mountains of Nepal. Similarly, some rivers have been germinated from Mahabharat and Chure hills. More than 600 rivers of Nepal are the real assets of our country.

As good people see the way on the mountain and bad people see the mountain on the way, the government of Nepal should adopt appropriate steps for the maximum utilization of the water resources of the river. I hope the government will use the rivers for different purposes.
