Understanding the Need and Importance of Learning English

If one knows the English language he/she can be the citizen the world. He/she will have wide range of trade, politics, pedagogy, science and technology and many more throughout the world after having the knowledge of English language. Due to the rapid development of science and technology, the world is being narrow.

Most importantly, English as a global language serves the functions of international lingua franca. As we know lingua franca is a language that is used by the speakers of different languages so that they can achieve their communication goal.

The need and importance of learning English can be viewed from the why people or learners learn English. Some of the reasons of learning English according to Harmer (2008) can be viewed as follows :-

One of the most important reasons for learning English is that it is on the curriculum at educational institutes ranging from primary to university level. In this globalized era, some people want to learn English for progress to elevate their personal and professional growth and to stay up to date in an ever changing world.

Companies are becoming more international, and English is listed as an essential skill for more and more jobs.

There are some organizations that now conduct all their business in English, no matter where in the world they are based.

For the best paid opportunities and/or to create the chances of employability, learning English is a great idea.

Similarly, learning English makes it much easier to travel anywhere we want. For example, aeroplane announcements, train timetables, emergency information and street signs are often translated into English, particularly in countries that use a different type of alphabet.

The reasons for learning may vary from person to person and place to place. Some need English for a Specific Purpose (ESP; sometimes also called English for Special Purposes).

According to Harmer (2008), Many students need English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in order to study at an English-speaking university or college, or because they need to access English-language academic texts.

Many people learn English because they think it will be useful in some way for international communication and travel. Such students of ESP) may need to learn legal language, or the language of tourism, banking or nursing, for example.

Most of the content on the internet is written in English. Many of the world’s biggest news outlets, including TV show, movies, pop music, newspapers, magazines and radio, are produced in English language.

English is the international language of media and arts and so, if we wants to access as much as possible for ourselves, without relying on translations, it’s the most powerful language you can learn today.

Need and Importance of English Language in Nepalese Context

As English is the global language, the need and importance of English language in Nepalese context is:

  • To make learners able to speak in English for general purposes with a good degree of precision.
  • To make learners read and appreciate a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, in a range of media, understanding the ideas and information they convey with a good degree of precision.
  • To enable learners to write descriptive, narrative and imaginative texts, in a range of different forms and media with a fair degree of accuracy.
  • To use all four language skills in a variety of personal, social and academic contexts.
  • To use English language to think creatively, critically and to solve problems that crop up in the real life and to promote tolerance and maintain socio-cultural harmony.
  • To make learners be one of the members of this global village.
  • For successful career and personality development.
  • To keep one updated with knowledge in different fields.
  • To participate in international program, conferences and to study in an English speaking country.
  • To communicate with foreigners and for other emotional, personal, intellectual and social purposes.
  • Interact, communicate and collaborate effectively with others orally in pairs, groups and whole class discussion.
  • To know more about the culture of target language group.

In a nutshell, the world is a global village and it is only English language to communicate with all the citizens of this global village.

To see it from another perspective, if a person knows English language he/she can survive in every corner of the world utilizing his/her English language.
